Art & Design @ Crawford

Art & Design stimulates creativity and imagination. It provides visual, tactile and sensory experiences and a unique way of understanding and responding to the world. Pupils can use colour, form, texture, and pattern and feel materials and process; to communicate what they see, feel and think.

Our aims in Art & Design

To develop and extend pupils visual creativity, curiosity, enquiry and aesthetic sensitivity to the natural and man-made world, to ensure that all pupils:
•    produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences;
•    become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques;
•    evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design;
•    know about great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms.

Our objectives

•    To provide a range of stimulating and creative opportunities which create a framework for success and enjoyment, thus enhancing self-esteem;
•    To develop pupils’ visual perception, awareness, curiosity and sensitivity to the natural and built environment, through working from observation and direct experience;
•    To foster the development of making skills using a variety of media, techniques and scale. Pupils can thus develop the ability and confidence to realise their ideas successfully in two and three dimensions both expressively and in design;
•    To develop the pupils’ capability in developing and expressing ideas through art by visual investigation and the gathering and organisation of reference materials and resources;
•    To encourage pupils to evaluate and review their work and that of others, both individually and in group;
•    To provide pupils with an understanding of the visual elements of art so that they can use this effectively in carrying out their creative ideas;
•    To develop pupils’ understanding and appreciation of art and design as a positive force within their everyday life;
•    To encourage pupils to respond to, and articulate opinions on art, craft and design and sculpture and use a specialist art vocabulary when describing their work and ideas.

Art and Design Vision Statement

Every child is an artist – some just don’t realise it.  Our aim is to remove the inhibitions and fear that builds up as children grow and keep them in tune with the creativity they are born with. We get every child to experiment, create, fail, succeed and get their hands dirty. Above all we enable them to express themselves while they experience the joy of working together, and the beauty of colour, form, light and materials.

We aim for our children to learn that achievement is a result of effort, and through making the children understand that they perhaps ‘can’t do it -  YET’, we build self-esteem, resilience, and an understanding that curiosity, imagination, and questioning can be really enjoyable at the same time as thought-provoking and relaxing.

Design affects every aspect of our lives and we give our children awareness of how design impacts the world. Art and design teaches children about the work of artists, craftspeople, designers, and architects from around the world.  Children learn the vocabulary of art and design, and they experience a broad range of disciplines. They learn to appreciate the creativity of others by fostering a sense of equality and celebrating effort. At Crawford Village, we constantly highlight the links to all other subjects, for example history, religion, science and mathematics. We learn how other cultures have inspired great artists, and have influenced all areas of design from fashion to architecture.

Cultural Capital within Art and Design

Art supports spiritual development by creating time and space for reflection, and is an excellent way to explore feelings. It supports mental health and wellbeing and gives children skills they can use to relax when they are away from school. Art gives a sense of identity and self worth through a process that is enjoyable. It gives opportunities for creativity and expanding imagination. By looking at the art and sculpture of different religions it is possible to explore many aspects of spiritual belief.

Art supports moral development by using the work of great artists to explore values expressed in paintings. Pupils can interpret for themselves what a painting represents and the art is used as a prompt for general discussion, such as the place of women in society. Art is used to illustrate moral issues such as nature and the environment. It nurtures collaboration, celebrates diversity and teaches tolerance.

Art and design supports social development because it fosters a sense of equality – all pupils can succeed in art. This gives many opportunities for mutual respect when discussing work in class and by putting work on display. Pupils learn how to discuss work positively and how to make suggestions kindly. Art teaches pupils about compromise and tolerance when sharing resources and in having to work to deadlines.

Art and Design supports cultural development by nurturing a curiosity and fascination with the creativity around us and in all cultures around the world. We use art and sculpture to learn about heritage and all the links to other subjects, for example history, religion, and geography. We learn how other cultures inspired great artists, and have influenced all areas of design from fashion to architecture. We learn that art and design are the key expressions of all civilisations.
