Mental Health Awareness

Mental health problems can cause distress to individuals and those who care for them. The Prime Minister has said that mental health is one of the “greatest social challenges of our time”. Overall, it is estimated that one in ten children and young people have a diagnosable mental disorder – the equivalent of three pupils in every classroom across the country. Therefore schools and colleges are a vital part of a wider systems approach to promoting positive mental wellbeing and preventing mental illness in children and young people.

At Crawford Village Primary School we take our responsibility to support children and their families very seriously. We will be working with the National Children's Bureau to achieve a school's Well-being Award.  This means as a school we are committed to:

  • Embedding a culture which values the happiness and emotional welfare of all its pupils
  • Ensuring that the promotion of good mental health and emotional wellbeing is the responsibility of all the whole school community including: staff, governors, parents and pupils, and partner organisations beyond the school gates
  • Showing the school’s commitment to promoting wellbeing as part of day-to-day school life
  • Developing a whole school strategy for improving the wellbeing of pupils
  • Attracting and retain high-quality staff

Children's Mental Health Booklist Reading Well for Children launched in Libraries

During Children’s Mental Health Week 2020 Oxfordshire Libraries supported the launch of Reading Well for Children, a new national initiative by The Reading Agency recommending books to help children, families and carers understand their feelings and worries and cope with tough times.

The books were chosen by children themselves, carers, librarians and health experts and are aimed at children aged 7-11yrs in Key Stage 2. The books have a wide range of reading levels to support less confident readers and encourage children to read together with siblings and carers. Titles cover the themes Healthy Minds, Worries, Feelings, World Around You, Dealing with Tough Times, and When you have a Condition.
