Crawford Village Primary Music Curriculum

Our music curriculum is taught progressively through three interrelated pillars:

  • Technical —
    • Competence in controlling sound (instrumental, vocal or with music technology)
    • Use of a communication system, such as staff notation or guitar tab
  • Constructive —
    • Knowledge of the musical elements/interrelated dimensions of music in performing, composition and listening/appraising
    • Knowledge of the components of composition
  • Expressive —
    • Musical quality
    • Musical creativity
    • Knowledge of musical meanings across the world and time

The pillars of music are developed through the curriculum which progressively builds the following key substantive concepts:

  • Listening and appraising — exploring feelings and emotions in response to music, giving opinions, identifying instruments, structure and musical features.
  • Performing (controlling sounds through singing and playing) — singing (developing pitch, melody, rhythm and control individually and as part of a group), playing instruments, practising, presenting, recording and evaluating.
  • Composing and improvisation (creating a developing musical ideas) — notating, representing sounds through symbols, standard and non-standard notation.
  • Musicianship — understanding and using the interrelated dimensions of music such as pulse/beat, rhythm, pitch, melody, tempo, dynamics, timbre, texture and structure.

Children make use of the knowledge and skills by also exploring the following disciplinary concepts:

  • Chronology, continuity and change — the history of music and changes over time.
  • Similarity and difference — comparing pieces of music, identifying common/different styles and techniques.
  • Significance — significant composers/musicians, pieces of music and musical movements and periods.
  • Communication — written, oral and creative expressions using musical terminology, responding, performing, refining, describing, experimenting and exploring.

Inclusion in Music

At Crawford Village Primary School, we believe that music is for everyone.  It is a universale form of communication that can affect and change the way we think, feel and act. Inclusion is at the heart of our Music curriculum, ensuring that all students have the opportunity to participate, create, perform and succeed, regardless of their background, ability, experience or individual needs.

We celebrate the rich diversity of musical traditions from around the world and encourage students to explore a wide range of genres, cultures and styles. Lessons are designed to be accessible and engaging, with a variety of practical, listening, composing and performance activities that allow every student to develop their musical skills and confidence.  We provide opportunities for children to play in small groups or ensembles as well as organising and collaborating in projects to enable children to share their musical skills at different events both inside and outside of school.

Through collaboration, creativity and mutual respect, students learn to value different perspectives and contributions. By creating a supportive and welcoming environment, we aim to inspire every young person to discover their musical voice and experience the joy and lifelong benefits of music-making.

Music Vision Statement

Intent

At Crawford Village Primary School, we make music an enjoyable learning journey.  Children are given the opportunity to participate in a rich variety of musical experiences, through which we nurture talent, build confidence and celebrate a sense of achievement.  Our teaching enables children to:

  • listen to and appreciate different forms of music, across a range of historical periods, genres, styles and traditions, developing a lifelong love of music

  • sing and learn to use their voices to convey feelings and emotions

  • learn to play a musical instrument and perform as a musician

  • understand and explore how music is created, produced and communicated including using technology appropriately

Implementation

Our music curriculum is designed to progressively develop childrens skills in the areas of musical appreciation (listening and discussing), performance on instruments and with voice, composition and recording and evaluating musical performances. We encourage children to focus on the work of great musicians for inspiration and exploration, and to build up a repertoire of techniques and approaches that they can apply in their own compositions.

Impact

Through the teaching of music children will:

  • achieve age related expectations in music at the end of their cohort year

  • develop a secure knowledge and understanding of music throughout history, across traditions and how music can influence and reflect the way people think and feel

  • embed key skills to improve their own performance and self-confidence and that provide them with an understanding of how to further develop those skills should they wish to pursue their interest further

  • develop analytical and evaluation skills through appraising both their own work and the work of others

  • develop their communication skills and an awareness of others through discussing and sharing ideas using appropriate musical vocabulary
